Concepts of Holistic Healing

For the past ten years I have been a certified holistic healer. Whenever I give a healing session, I attempt to communicate certain principals.

A holistic healer is not a doctor

There are many differences between allopathy (standard medicine) and holistic healing. While allopathy tends to concentrate primarily on the body part that needs attention, holistic healing evaluates the whole person. While standard medicine focuses on addressing specific health issues, holistic healing focuses on balancing a person so that there are no issues to address. While allopathy tends to be reactive in nature, holistic healing leans towards preventive practices.

You are responsible for you own healing

The most important concept to get across is that a holistic healer does not ‘fix’ anything. It is not the responsibility of a healer to make you better. That is your responsibility alone. Though you may require assistance, you are the only person who can improve your health.

No matter how hard I work as a healer, I cannot heal someone who does not desire to heal. I could massage tense shoulder muscles for hours with no effect unless the recipient chooses to relax the muscles. It may be possible for someone to assist in the healing process, but it is your responsibility to heal yourself.

Your life is not something that happens to you. Instead, your life is something that you create through your actions and inactions. While each of us may deal with unique challenges, it is how we address those challenges that define the outcome. You gain power by accepting responsibility for all aspects of your life.

Continually Improve Yourself

Each day of your life, your energetic vibration can be better, worse or the same as the day before. If you are not content with your physical condition, make minor adjustments each day that move towards your ideal. Until you have reached a desired plateau, there is always something that improves your vibration.

As a healer, the most important work is on myself. It is beneficial to enter a healing session with a balanced field. When I work on someone with a disrupted energy field, maintaining my own balance helps them move towards personal balance. Learning to manage my own field has been a continuous journey and provides me with a lifetime of opportunity.

Holistic healing is preventative rather than reactive

While holistic healing techniques may improve ongoing conditions, the real benefit comes from practicing the techniques while in a state of health. Based on establishing a balanced lifestyle and dealing with issues before they become a physical condition, holistic healing can become a way of life.  Some take this to the extreme, changing their diet and reducing exposure to environmental stress.  Others simply raise awareness of issues that may lead to distress and imbalance, making adjustments when necessary.

Healing involves everything about you

The concept of healing does not just apply to the physical body. There is much more going on than that. Everything that you do affects your health. Your thoughts and emotions have direct impact on your state of being. Everything you remember affects who you are. Everything that you swallow makes a difference. How you express your emotions changes your world. In holistic healing, every element of self is open for investigation.

Healing is not curing, and once an illness has become manifest, it may require more than preventative practice.  Healing is the act of becoming whole and at peace with oneself.  In addition to addressing physical elements, holistic healing also considers how intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects contribute to your current state of being.

A simple example for comparison is headaches.  In standard medicine, the treatment of a headache usually involves drugs.  Research focuses on the neurological engine and how to alter it through medication. Once the pain cycle has begun, a painkiller is administered so that feelings are numbed and pain goes away. Unfortunately, the cycle keeps repeating and migraines become habitual.

In contrast, holistic healing investigates the root cause of headaches.  Are there stressful or emotional issues that lead to consistent neck and shoulder tension?  How are thoughts related to migraine pain? What inner conflicts add to mind chatter? What are the many elements that contribute to the complex condition called migraine? A holistic approach considers everything in a person’s life that may contribute to headaches.

The body is a powerful machine

If encouraged, the physical body is remarkable at healing. Sometimes it is just a matter of not aggravating a condition and it will go away. Other times more effort is required and external assistance may be necessary. However in general, the body is constantly healing itself every day. All you have to do is encourage healing through thought and practice. The three key elements affecting health are what you ingest, what you think and what you do.

Of course each individual has different challenges and some cannot be overcome. Part of healing is accepting the realities of your life and progressing forward.  Another part of healing is creating your own reality. Migraines can be eliminated without medication. I used to have migraines. Now I don’t.

Drugs are not the answer

Some people expect to take headache medication for the rest of their lives, yet still feel the pain of migraines. While prescription medications may temporarily alter the body so that pain goes away, the headaches always come back. A continuous overdose of any substance challenges the body’s ability to find its own balance and requires extra effort. Medications only mask the issues and do not solve anything. There are many things going on inside you that contribute to your headaches.

One of the greatest steps I took in eliminating migraines was to first eliminate medication. Again, I am not a doctor so cannot give medical advice. However, when I stopped taking pills the headache buildup cycle was altered. Though I did have occasional headaches for a while after stopping medication, the pain was not as intense as when I was medicating. Because I had made my mind up to let my body heal on its own, it did.

A common misunderstanding when discussing holistic methods for migraine elimination is reference to homeopathic or other holistic remedies. Substituting a natural product for a pharmaceutical product neglects to address the key issues. Swallowing something only makes a headaches go away temporarily. Looking for an external cure for your pain ignores internal matters that must be addressed before migraines can be eliminated.

Look for Internal Solutions

While your body requires nutritional assistance as fuel, usually it can do most of it’s own healing. However, if internal imbalances are continuous, health issues may surface. When healing begins from within it can have the greatest influence on your physical shell. The power to heal yourself lies within; all you need do is access it.

The body also retains energy from past experiences. Sometimes this is called cellular memory or disrupted energy. Every occasion from birth until today has influenced who you are. Sometimes we carry energy from past events that affects our overall health and balance. We often carry beliefs that restrict us from progressing. By identifying and releasing low-vibration energy our health can be greatly improved.

I used to have headaches, now I don’t. Part of the reason I can make that statement is that I learned and accepted the principles of holistic healing. In order to become someone who used to have migraines, you may have to modify the way you think. To me these concepts are now common sense; you have the option to believe what you want to believe.
